Tarot card reading

My readings always begin with a tarot spread.

Without overthinking it, choose 4 cards out of these 22:

The order in which you turn them over matters: I read each card in the place you give it.

Breaking Up: Clarifying Your Decision Without Rushing

Stay or leave. It is probably the heaviest question you can bring to a reading, and it is also the one no reading will ever settle for you.

What symbolic work can do, on the other hand, is separate two things we constantly mix up at such times. And that distinction often changes everything.

The two forces we confuse

The fear of what would come afterwards. Emptiness, loneliness, practical arrangements, other people's opinions, the feeling of failure.

The real desire to leave. What you are missing in this relationship, what you no longer find in it, what you would like to live differently.

These two forces produce very similar sensations, and people spend months mistaking one for the other. Many discover, by laying them side by side, that what holds them back is not the relationship but the dread of what comes after.

This discovery decides nothing. It simply makes a decision possible, because it is no longer made in a fog.

A structured spread for this question

Five positions, defined before shuffling. This spread is not done in a hurry, nor on the evening of an argument.

  1. What I gain by staying.
  2. What I lose by staying.
  3. What I gain by leaving.
  4. What I lose by leaving.
  5. What weighs on the decision that I have not yet named.

The fifth position does almost all the work. Nine times out of ten, it puts its finger on something you know perfectly well and have never said in front of anyone.

This structure belongs to the family of decision spreads, and it works precisely because it avoids closed questions that leave no room for nuance.

The questions to ask yourself alongside

The spread never works alone. A few written questions, asked with a cool head, usefully complete it.

  • How long have I been asking myself this question?
  • What have I already tried to say, and how was it received?
  • Would I like the relationship to change, or would I like it to end?
  • What would I say to someone who described exactly my situation to me?

That last one is the most effective of all. We are almost always more clear sighted about other people. It is actually the whole principle of a reading used as a mirror to regain your ability to decide: recovering the distance you naturally have when facing someone else's situation.

Why not rush

Three practical reasons.

A decision made in turmoil comes undone in turmoil. Separations decided on an angry evening are very often followed by returns, which complicate everything.

The context of the moment distorts judgment. A period of exhaustion at work, a move, a loss, color everything and spill over onto the relationship.

What has not been said will come back. If an essential conversation has never taken place, it will play out again in the next relationship.

What the spread will not do

It will not tell you what to do. It will not predict whether the relationship could have lasted. It will say nothing about the other person's intentions or plans.

Nor does it replace the conversation you need to have, which in every case remains the decisive step.

Finally, as soon as material or legal questions come into play, it is qualified professionals you need to consult. No symbolic reading has anything to say on that ground, and a serious practitioner will refer you to them.

The reflex to watch for

Redrawing every week on the same question, for months.

It is a sign that the reading no longer serves to decide but to endure the indecision. Each spread brings a few days of relief, then the question comes back intact.

If you recognize yourself, your journal is your best ally: seeing in black and white how many times you have asked the same question has an immediate effect and helps you break out of that cycle.

If the relationship has been stalled for a long time

There is an intermediate situation, very common: neither crisis nor decision, just a stagnation that drags on.

It is not quite the same question, and it calls for other phrasings. Reading the signs of a stalled relationship, by looking at what keeps the balance in place rather than at what needs deciding, is often the preliminary step.

After the decision

Whatever it is, it will not produce its effects immediately. A decision of this kind is borne out over several months.

If you choose to leave, wait before getting another reading on the subject. The first days after a separation are the ones when you hear least well, and why it is better to wait before getting a reading after a recent breakup explains exactly what happens at those moments.

If you choose to stay, give that decision concrete content: a conversation to have, something to ask for, a boundary to set. A decision to stay that changes nothing is not a decision.

For such an important decision, an online spread can only give a tendency. Understanding what distinguishes an automated spread from a personal reading will help you know when an outside perspective becomes useful.

If the Chariot appears in your spread, it often indicates that a decision is ripe and that it is time to move forward. See the meaning of the Chariot in tarot.

If the Hanged Man appears, it is not necessarily a sign that you should stay: it invites you to look at the situation differently. Discover its meaning in tarot.

What to remember

Separate the fear of emptiness from the desire to leave. Lay out the four terms of the balance, look for the fifth that has not been named, and do not decide in turmoil.

To place this work within everything a reading brings to your love life, the general framework of a reading about a relationship says it plainly: the decision belongs to you, entirely and exclusively.
