Tarot card reading

My readings always begin with a tarot spread.

The order in which you turn them over matters: I read each card in the place you give it.

How to Use a Pendulum and Ask It a Question

You have your pendulum. It is pretty, you like it. Now what? How do you hold it? How do you know what it is answering? Which questions should you ask it? Using a pendulum is learned the way you learn to ride a bike: a few simple gestures, a little patience, and a lot of practice. Here is a step by step guide, designed for beginners.

Step 1: holding your pendulum

Take the chain between the thumb and index finger of your dominant hand. Let the pendulum hang about four inches down. Your elbow can rest on the table for more stability. Your wrist should stay supple, not tense.

Imagine you are holding a feather: neither too tight nor too loose.

Step 2: centering yourself

Before asking a question, take a moment to calm down. A few deep breaths, eyes closed if you like. The goal is to quiet your mind, so that your emotions do not influence the movement.

If you like short exercises, you can draw inspiration from the one in our article on meditating with a card for ten minutes: the same principle of concentration applies to the pendulum.

Step 3: establishing your code

Each pendulum, or rather each person, has their own language. So you need to define it:

  1. Hold the pendulum still.
  2. Ask it: "Show me yes." Observe the movement: rotation in one direction, swinging back and forth, and so on.
  3. Ask: "Show me no." Observe.
  4. You can also ask: "Show me I don't know."

Write these movements down. Repeat the exercise several days in a row to check that they are stable.

Step 4: practicing on known questions

Before asking important questions, practice on questions whose answer you know: "Is my name Claire?", "Is it Tuesday?". This lets you check your code and gain confidence.

Step 5: phrasing a good question

It is the key to a useful answer. A good pendulum question is:

  • closed: it can be answered with yes or no;
  • single: one idea at a time;
  • positive: avoid negatives;
  • precise: "Is this week the right time to send this file?" rather than "Will it work out?".

Step 6: asking the question and observing

Ask the question out loud or in your mind. Keep the pendulum still at first, then let it move. Do not try to anticipate. Wait until the movement is clear before interpreting it.

Step 7: noting the answer and not asking again

Write down the answer. And above all, do not ask the same question again right away to "check". The pendulum, like tarot, loses all meaning when you question it in a loop.

Questions to avoid

  • Questions about health, legal matters or financial investments: they belong to professionals.
  • Questions about another person's precise thoughts.
  • Questions you are too emotionally attached to.

In love, precisely, the temptation is strong. Our article on the free love pendulum and the questions to ask it offers more accurate phrasings.

Pendulum and tarot: making them work together

The pendulum answers closed questions, tarot describes a situation. Combining them lets you go further: a tarot spread to understand, then the pendulum to clarify a point. To discover tarot, our guide tarot spreads, understanding the arcana and the decks is a good base.

What if the pendulum does not move?

It is common at first. There are several possible reasons: fatigue, tension, a badly phrased question, lack of practice. Do not get discouraged: try the exercise again another day, at a calmer moment.

From the online pendulum to a real one

Many people discover the pendulum on the internet, with a virtual tool. It is a playful approach that lets you get started, but it does not replace the dialogue with a real pendulum. To understand the difference between an automated tool and a real reading, read our article on automated spreads and personal readings, as well as our analysis of what a free online reading is really worth.

The pendulum as a tool for reflection

Beyond the answers, the pendulum teaches you to phrase clearly what you want to know. And that is often where the real answer is born. Used this way, it becomes a tool for introspection, in the spirit of the spread as an inner mirror of self confidence.

In summary

To use a pendulum: hold it loosely, center yourself, establish your yes and no code, practice on known questions, then ask closed, simple and precise questions. Write down the answer and do not ask the same question again. With a little practice, your pendulum will become a reliable ally in your reflection.
