The Moon in Tarot: Meaning of Arcanum XVIII
The Moon is a card that unsettles. Beneath a pensive faced moon, two dogs howl, a crayfish emerges from a pool, two towers rise in the distance. The atmosphere is strange, dreamlike, a little worrying. In readings, I often see it come out when the client is plunged in doubt, when they can no longer tell what they feel from what they imagine. The Moon does not lie: it says that not everything is clear yet.
Description of the card
At the top, a large moon with a face in profile, from which colored drops fall. Below, two dogs (or a dog and a wolf) face each other and seem to howl at it. In the foreground, a pool of water from which a crayfish emerges. In the background, two towers.
- The moon evokes emotion, dreams, the unconscious.
- The dogs represent instincts, the tame and the wild parts of ourselves.
- The crayfish symbolizes what rises from the depths: memories, fears, intuitions.
- The towers mark a boundary, a passage.

In a relationship
The Moon describes a relationship where emotions are strong but confused. There may be things left unsaid, misunderstandings, doubts. It does not necessarily announce a breakup: it invites you to clarify what you feel and not to project your fears onto the other person. When a relationship seems to be going in circles, our article on the signals of a stagnating relationship, to read with the cards can help.

The Moon at work
At work, the Moon evokes:
- fog: missing information, unclear instructions;
- a period of uncertainty, of waiting;
- creative and artistic careers, linked to imagination or listening.
It advises checking information before making an important decision.
The Moon and money
For money, the Moon invites vigilance: check your accounts, reread contracts, do not trust promises that sound too good. It predicts no loss, but it signals a lack of clarity.
The Moon reversed
Reversed, the Moon is rather good news:
- the confusion clears;
- a truth appears;
- fears lose their grip.
It can also, more rarely, signal repressed emotions seeking expression.
The Moon in a yes or no reading
The Moon answers "no for now" or "too much fog to answer". Better to wait until you have more information.
Common combinations
- The Moon and the High Priestess: secrets, a strong intuition to listen to.
- The Moon and the Sun: the passage from doubt to clarity.
- The Moon and the Star: hope mixed with uncertainty.
- The Moon and the Devil: illusions, a murky relationship.
- The Moon and the Tower: an illusion collapsing abruptly.
A card to welcome
The Moon is often filed among the "negative" cards. Yet it has a lot to offer: it reconnects us with our sensitivity, our dreams, our intuition. Like all the cards reputed to be difficult, it is better read as a useful signal, as explained in our article on so called negative cards.
The Moon's introspective spread
The Moon is ideal for inner work. Ask yourself three questions:
- What do I really feel in this situation?
- What am I imagining, without proof?
- What do I need to know to see more clearly?
This approach is developed in our article on the introspective spread and the right questions to ask yourself, and more broadly in our approach of the spread as an inner mirror of self confidence.

In summary
The Moon is the card of emotion, dreams and doubt. In love, it describes strong but confused feelings. At work, fog to clear up. For money, necessary vigilance. Reversed, clarity returning. Its message: decide nothing in the fog, wait for the light to return.
