Couple Birth Charts: Synastry Explained Simply
Synastry consists of overlaying two birth charts to observe how they respond to each other. It is the tool astrologers use when they are asked a question about a couple, and it has little to do with the compatibility charts you come across everywhere.
Here is how it works, what it shows, and above all what it does not show.
The principle
You calculate two complete charts, then place one on top of the other, like two tracing sheets. You then observe the angles the planets of one form with the planets of the other.
A concrete example: if Claude's Moon sits exactly where Dominique's Sun is, those two points are in conjunction. The traditional reading sees in it an immediate familiarity, a feeling of having known each other for a long time.
It is not signs being compared, it is precise positions. That is what makes synastry infinitely finer than a twelve entry grid.

The contacts you look at first
Sun and Moon crossed. The most discussed contact. It describes a complementarity between one person's direction and the other's need for security.
Moon and Moon. The most decisive in daily life. Two emotional needs that resemble each other produce a smooth understanding, sometimes a little blind. Two opposite needs produce concrete friction, very negotiable as soon as it is named.
That is actually where you should start, and what the position of the Moon in a chart precisely reveals gives you the vocabulary you need to read this contact.
Venus and Mars. The register of attraction and desire. These contacts often explain the intensity at the start of a relationship, without saying anything about how long it will last.
Saturn and the personal points. The most ambivalent contact. Saturn brings duration and seriousness, sometimes heaviness or a feeling of having to earn your place. It is the one that calls for the most nuance in reading.
Overlapping houses
A second, subtler and very telling level of reading. You look at which area of one person's life the other person's planets fall into.
If your partner's planets mostly fall into your home sector, the relationship plays out on the ground of intimacy and roots. If they fall into your career sector, it will take on a color of building something and sharing a project.
The meaning of the twelve areas of life in a chart becomes very practical here: it shows the ground on which the relationship naturally unfolds.
This level of reading requires reliable birth times for both people. Without them, the houses cannot be calculated, and how to work out a rising sign without getting the time wrong becomes a prerequisite on both sides.
What synastry does not say
Let us be clear, because this is precisely where expectations go astray.
It does not say whether a relationship will last. No configuration guarantees or condemns. Couples with synastries reputed to be difficult last for decades, and the reverse is just as true.
It sets no date. Not for a meeting, a reconciliation or a separation.
It says nothing about the feelings of someone who is not there. Analyzing the chart of someone who has not asked for anything to find out what they feel does not work, and it also raises a question of good manners.
It does not replace a conversation. This is the most important limit. A synastry can name a difficulty, it does not resolve it.

The use that really works
The best use of this tool is descriptive, never predictive. It consists of putting words to a friction you felt without being able to express it.
"I feel alone when you go quiet" and "I need silence to recover" describe the same scene seen from both sides. Understanding that these two needs coexist without anyone being wrong changes the quality of the conversation that follows.
That is exactly what people come looking for when a relationship becomes confusing, and what a perspective can really bring to your love life often comes down to this: recovering the ability to name things, and therefore to talk about them.
Other approaches to the couple
Synastry is not alone. There is the composite chart, which merges the two charts to describe the relationship as an entity, and comparisons of transits, which observe the periods each person is going through.
These variants require experience and do not lend themselves well to self study. Start with simple synastry, on three or four contacts only.
Beware of simplified grids
You will come across many shortcuts presented as synastry that are not: comparisons of sun signs dressed up in technical vocabulary.
The test is simple. If the analysis did not ask you for both people's time and place of birth, it is not synastry. Why sign compatibility does not hold up explains in detail what separates the two approaches.
If you consult someone
A couple reading is ideally requested by both people. Having the relationship analyzed without the other person's knowledge produces an unbalanced and often disappointing reading.
Check the framework too: a serious practitioner will tell you what they do not cover, will announce no date and will promise no outcome. The criteria that set a reliable professional apart apply particularly here, because couple questions attract the most spectacular promises.
To place this reading within an overall approach, how to read a natal sky remains the prerequisite: you can only compare well what you already know how to read separately.
