Gé Oracle, Osho Zen: How to Choose Your Oracle Deck

Unlike tarot, whose structure is fixed, an oracle is a free form deck. Its creator chooses the number of cards, the themes, the tone. The result: two oracles can have absolutely nothing in common.

This freedom is both an advantage and a trap. The advantage: you can find a deck that suits you exactly. The trap: you can buy three decks that do not speak to you.

Here is how to choose.

The main families of oracles

Situation oracles

They name circumstances directly: Separation, Success, Waiting. Their reading is immediate and their effectiveness on concrete questions is real.

The best known in the French tradition belongs to this family, and what really sets it apart from tarot gives a good idea of what this approach allows and of its limits.

Oracles with a direct tone

Some decks have a reputation for frankness, sometimes blunt. The cards name situations without mincing words, which suits people who want to be shaken up very well, and people going through a fragile period very poorly.

A point of vigilance: a direct tone must never become anxiety inducing. A deck that consistently leaves you more worried than before is not the right deck for you, whatever its reputation.

Personal growth oracles

There are a great many of them, offering messages geared toward introspection and calm, often with gentle visuals. They work well as a support for morning reflection.

Their limit is well known: they rarely tell you something you could not have guessed, whereas the structure of a tarot deck and its combinations of arcana produces connections you did not expect. That is their nature, not a flaw, as long as you know what you are buying.

Themed oracles

Devoted to a single subject: work, the seasons, your relationship with yourself. They are helpful when the question falls exactly within their scope, and spin their wheels as soon as you step outside it.

Think of them as extra tools, never as a main deck.

The four criteria that matter

1. Do the images appeal to you? It is the best predictor of how regularly you will use it. A deck you do not want to look at will not come out of its box.

2. Does the tone suit you? Look at three or four cards and read their names. If the vocabulary makes you uncomfortable, move on.

3. The number of cards. Below forty, the deck quickly repeats itself. Above eighty, learning becomes long.

4. The booklet. A good booklet suggests questions to ask yourself in front of the card. A bad one hammers out fixed meanings and, worse, dated announcements. Be wary of booklets that promise events or results.

What does not matter

The price, the rarity of the edition, the deck's fame. An expensive oracle is not a better instrument.

Nor does the number of decks you own. It is actually the most common mistake: you accumulate and dig into nothing. A single tool for six months produces infinitely more than a drawer full of them.

Oracle or tarot: the preliminary question

Before choosing an oracle, make sure it is really the kind of tool you need.

An oracle gives quicker, more direct answers. A structured deck accepts ambiguity and produces unexpected combinations. Comparing the two according to the type of question usually settles it in a few minutes.

And if no family of cards appeals to you, there are entirely different registers. The comparison of divination tools and what each one requires saves you from forcing yourself with an instrument that matches neither your temperament nor your questions.

If you are curious to explore several tools alongside each other, know that there are ways to combine them without losing coherence.

How to test a deck before committing

You cannot always handle a deck before buying it, but you can do better: define in advance what you expect from it.

Write down three questions you would like to ask. Then see whether the deck you are considering has cards capable of answering them. An oracle devoted to the seasons will not help you with a career decision.

Once you have the deck in hand, give it a fair three week trial: one card a day, noted in three lines. How to keep a spread journal to progress faster gives you the method, and rereading it after three weeks will tell you unambiguously whether the deck speaks to you.

The cards that disturb

Even in the gentlest decks, some cards make you recoil. That is normal, and it is often a sign that they are touching something.

The reflex to avoid is redrawing to get something better. It closely resembles the one observed with the big tarot cards reputed to be worrying: you want to negotiate with the spread. The card that disturbs is almost always the most useful one of the session.

If you are hesitating between an oracle and a more direct tool, the pendulum is worth trying: see how to use a pendulum and ask it a question.

One last recommendation

Buy only one deck. Give it six months. If after that time it still does not speak to you, change it, but do not accumulate.

And remember what an oracle can do: slow your thinking down, offer an angle, force you to put things into words. It predicts nothing, guarantees nothing, and replaces no qualified professional on matters of health, law or money. The rest belongs to you.
