How to Cleanse a Pendulum: Simple Methods
Your pendulum seems less precise than before. Its movements hesitate, its answers contradict each other. Or you have just bought it, and you read that you should "cleanse" it before using it. Do you really have to? How? How often? After years of practice, here is what I advise my clients: simple, gentle methods suited to your pendulum's material, and a bit of common sense.
Why cleanse a pendulum?
In the dowsing tradition, the pendulum is thought to become "charged" over the course of sessions, especially after emotionally loaded questions. Cleansing serves to reset it, to get back a neutral tool.
You can also see it differently: cleansing your pendulum is above all a way of getting yourself back into the right frame of mind. The gesture marks a pause, a transition. It helps you start again with a clear mind, without the worry of the previous session. Either way, the result is the same: clearer answers.
When to cleanse it?
- After buying it, before first use.
- After an intense session, when you asked very emotionally charged questions.
- When it seems less precise, or its answers become confused.
- Regularly, for example once a month if you use it often.
No need to do it after every question: cleansing too often brings nothing.
The most common methods
Clear water
The simplest method: run the pendulum under a trickle of cool water for a few seconds, with the intention of "cleaning" it of its previous uses. Then dry it gently with a soft cloth.
Caution: some stones do not tolerate water (selenite, malachite, some porous stones). Look up yours first.

Salt
You can lay the pendulum on a bed of dry salt for a few hours, or place it in a bowl next to the salt without direct contact. Salt is said to absorb accumulated energies.
Caution: salt can damage some stones and oxidize metals. Avoid direct contact with metal pendulums or fragile stones.

Moonlight
Leaving the pendulum overnight on a windowsill, under the light of the full moon, is a gentle and popular method. It suits almost every material.
Smoke
Some practitioners pass their pendulum through the smoke of an incense stick or dried herbs. It is a gentle, contact free method.
Sound
A singing bowl or a small bell, rung near the pendulum. A very gentle method, suitable for all materials.
Methods to avoid
- Prolonged direct sunlight for colored stones (amethyst, rose quartz): they can fade.
- Salt water for metals and porous stones.
- Household cleaning products, obviously.
Recharging your pendulum
After cleansing, some practitioners like to "recharge" their pendulum: setting it on a rock crystal cluster, holding it in their hands for a few minutes while focusing on an intention. Here again, the gesture counts as much as the method.
What about tarot cards?
The same principles apply to card and oracle decks. You can leave them under moonlight, pass them through smoke, or simply shuffle them at length with the intention of resetting them. This goes for a tarot deck as well as for a Belline oracle, which differs from tarot in many ways.
Cleansing is not enough: the importance of your code
If your pendulum stays confused even after cleansing, the problem often lies elsewhere: fatigue, badly phrased questions, or a yes and no code that has changed. Take the time to check it, as explained in our article on how to establish your yes and no code with the pendulum.
Keeping a record of your sessions
A practice notebook is an excellent ally. Note the date, the questions, the answers, and when you cleansed your pendulum. You may see trends emerge. Our article on keeping a spread journal to progress faster gives concrete advice.
The pendulum as a tool for reflection
Cleansing your pendulum is also a way of reminding yourself that its answers are not absolute truths. It serves to shed light, not to decide. This approach joins our article on interpreting a spread without trying to predict the future, and more broadly the idea of the spread as an inner mirror of self confidence.
Complementing the pendulum with tarot
The pendulum answers closed questions. To understand a situation in more depth, tarot is an ideal complement. If you are a beginner, a free three card spread, past, present and future is a good starting point. To go further, our guide tarot spreads, understanding the arcana and the decks lays the foundations, and our analysis of what a free online reading is really worth helps you make good use of freely available tools.
In summary
Cleansing a pendulum is simple: clear water, salt, moonlight, smoke or sound, depending on the material. Do it after buying, after an intense session, or when it seems less precise. Avoid methods that damage stones and metals. And keep in mind that the clarity of your answers also depends on your own state of mind.
