Pendulum: How to Establish Your Yes and No Code

It is the founding step, and it is the one almost everyone skips. You buy a pendulum, immediately ask it an important question, understand nothing of what happens, and put the object away in a drawer.

Yet the procedure takes ten minutes. Once, at the start. After that, everything becomes readable.

Why a personal convention

The pendulum speaks no universal language. The movements it produces only make sense in relation to a code you establish yourself.

You will sometimes read that clockwise rotation means yes. It is true for some people and false for others. Adopting a book's convention rather than your own is the first source of confusion for beginners.

The best documented mechanism, the ideomotor effect, explains why: the tiny movements depend on your body and your associations, not on an outside rule.

Draw the cards

The first step is just a few cards drawn at your fingertips.

The procedure, step by step

First settle in properly: seated, elbow on the table, forearm stable, chain held between thumb and index finger. This position conditions everything, and the very first settings to make with a pendulum are worth reviewing if you have any doubt.

Step 1. Hold the pendulum still above your free hand, palm open. Wait until it is completely at rest.

Step 2. Say out loud: "show me yes". Then do nothing. Wait without forcing it, sometimes for a full minute. Note the movement that sets in: rotation one way, swinging back and forth, swinging side to side.

Step 3. Stop the movement by setting the pendulum down for a few seconds. Start again with "show me no". The movement you get should be clearly different from the first.

Step 4. Start a third time with "show me I cannot answer". This third answer is the most valuable and the most neglected.

Step 5. Write these three movements down in your journal, with a small sketch.

The checking phase

Never move on to real questions without calibrating. The procedure is simple: ask about fifteen questions whose answer you know for certain.

"Is my name Claude?" "Is today Tuesday?" "Is this wall blue?" Alternate yes and no answers unpredictably.

If you get at least twelve correct answers, your code is established. If you are around half, something is wrong: go back over your position, relax your shoulder, and try again another day.

This phase takes two or three sessions. It will save you months.

The third answer, the most important

"I cannot answer" is not an admission of failure. It is information in its own right, and often the most accurate.

It usually appears in three cases: the question is badly phrased, it contains two subjects, or the emotional stakes are too high to get a clean reading.

An experienced practitioner gets this answer regularly, and stops there rather than rephrasing until satisfied.

The questions that work

The pendulum only handles closed questions. Three rules.

One question per phrasing. "Should I accept this job and move" contains two subjects and will give nothing usable.

No questions about other people. "Is he thinking of me" does not work. The pendulum reveals your tiny movements, and therefore your state, not someone else's thoughts.

No calendar questions. No symbolic tool sets a date.

If your question is complex, nuanced, or calls for an open answer, the pendulum is the wrong instrument. The comparison of divination tools and what each one allows will point you toward a tool suited to the kind of question you are really asking.

Let's go

A question keeps going round in your head? Ask it, take the time to write it down.

When the code seems to change

It happens, and it is nothing to worry about. Two explanations.

Either you have changed pendulums, and the new one needs complete recalibration.

Or your position has changed: a longer chain, the other hand, standing up. Go through the procedure again.

If none of this explains the change, the problem usually lies elsewhere: fatigue, tension or a badly phrased question.

Recording your code

Write it down, with the date. Also note the length of chain used and the hand you used.

It seems excessive until the day you pick up the pendulum again after six months off and remember nothing. Keeping a practice journal applies here from the very first session.

The best exercise after calibration

Once your code is stable, practice on verifiable questions. Looking for a lost object is ideal because the feedback is immediate and final.

The method for finding a lost object with a pendulum is the most formative training ground in the first months, precisely because you cannot fool yourself about the result.

Once your code is well established, you can also add a light daily practice, such as the free card of the day to guide your day, which complements pendulum work very well.

A limit to keep in mind

Your code, once established, does not turn the pendulum into an oracle. It simply makes your own reactions readable.

Distinguishing what comes from intuition, fear or desire then becomes the real skill, and that is precisely what a symbolic practice turned toward self observation works on.

It also means that on subjects where you have strong expectations, the answers will lean toward what you hope. It is a real limit, and the only defense is to write things down and reread them with a cool head.

Ten minutes of calibration, a checking phase, a journal. The rest comes with practice, and you remain the only one who decides what to do with the answers you get.
