How to Structure a Tarot Reading Session in 5 Steps

You have your tarot deck in your hands, but you don't know where to start? That hesitation is normal, I see it often with people just starting out. A well-structured session changes everything: it helps you stay focused, avoid getting scattered, and pull a real thread through your readings. Here are the five steps I use and recommend to my clients for organizing a tarot session from start to finish.

1. Prepare the Space and Your Mind

Before you touch the cards, set up a supportive environment. Pick a quiet spot where you won't be disturbed. Turn off your phone or put it on silent. Light a candle, take a few deep breaths. This small grounding ritual lets you step away from outside noise and get centered.

During this phase, I also suggest writing down your questions. Note what's really on your mind, no filter. If you struggle to phrase your concerns, know that a written consultation can help you clarify your expectations even before you pull cards. For that, a psychic reading by email, a serious written consultation without the phone offers a calm setting, ideal for those who prefer to take their time writing out their request.

2. Set a Clear Intention

A tarot session without an intention is a bit like going on a trip with no destination. Take time to define what you want to explore. Is it an aspect of your love life? A career question? A decision to make? Be specific.

For example, instead of asking "What will happen in my life?", go with "What blocks do I need to lift to move forward with my current project?" This clarity guides the spread and makes the interpretation more concrete. If you're new and don't have your own deck yet, you can try a free online tarot reading and what it's really worth to get familiar with the dynamic of a well-phrased question. But keep in mind that an online spread is a starting tool, not a substitute for a personal session.

3. Shuffle and Draw the Cards

Now comes the moment to handle the deck. Shuffle the cards while holding your intention in mind. Some prefer to cut the deck, others lay the cards face down and pick at random. There's no right or wrong method, the main thing is to stay connected to your question.

If you also use a pendulum alongside tarot, you can use it to validate a card or clarify a direction. Dowsing is another way to fine-tune your reading. To learn how to do it properly, check out our guide on how to use a pendulum and ask it a question. But for a simple session, stick with the cards: that's already plenty rich.

4. Interpret the Cards Without Getting Lost

This is the trickiest step, especially when you're starting out. You've laid down your cards, now what? Don't try to analyze everything at once. Read each card one by one, linking it to the position it holds in the spread. If you're using a method like the Celtic Cross or a three-card spread, refer to the meaning of each position.

To avoid the traps of an overly literal interpretation, I recommend reading our dedicated article: how to interpret a tarot spread without getting it wrong. You'll find tips to avoid over-interpreting and to separate your intuition from the card meanings.

During this phase, certain cards really catch your attention. For example, the eighth Major Arcana, Justice, points to balance, decisions, and taking responsibility for your actions. If it shows up in your spread, take time to explore Justice in tarot, meaning of the eighth Major Arcana. Similarly, the Tower (the sixteenth Major Arcana) can surprise you with its imagery. It speaks of upheaval, sudden release, but also rebuilding. To understand this card deeply, read the Tower in tarot, meaning of the sixteenth Major Arcana.

If your spread touches on relationship or compatibility questions, feel free to check out our analysis on compatibility between signs, myth or real guideline. It will give you extra insight without falling into generalities.

5. Close the Session and Integrate the Messages

Once the interpretation is done, don't put the deck away too quickly. Take a few minutes to write down the cards you pulled, your feelings, and the paths that emerge. This journal will be valuable later when you come back to the same topic.

Thank the cards, take a breath, then put your deck away. The session doesn't end there: the messages you received need to be digested. You can decide to take action or simply observe in the days ahead. Tarot is a tool for introspection, not a command to act right away.

If you feel you need more in-depth follow-up, a written or phone consultation with a practitioner can help you explore certain directions. But remember: you remain the only one who makes your choices. Tarot sheds light, it doesn't decide for you.

By structuring your session in five steps, you gain calm and effectiveness. The more you practice, the more natural this framework will become. And if a card especially catches your eye, don't hesitate to come back to the resources we've prepared to go deeper into each Major Arcana.
