Recurring Dreams: How to Record and Interpret Them Yourself

A dream that keeps coming back usually signals a question that has remained open. Not an omen, not a message: a question your waking mind has not settled and that keeps working somewhere else.

That is what makes recurring dreams interesting to record, and it is also what makes dream dictionaries more or less useless for understanding them.

The recording method

It comes down to three elements, to write down as soon as you wake up, before any other activity. Dream memory fades within minutes.

The setting. Where it takes place, and whether the place is familiar or unknown to you.

The main action. What you are doing, or what is happening to you. One sentence is enough.

The dominant feeling. This is the most important and the first to disappear. Fear, urgency, sadness, relief, indifference.

That third note carries the essentials. The same dream with a feeling of anguish or of calm does not tell the same story at all.

Do not try to put things in order, do not reconstruct a coherent story. Write the fragments down as they come.

Why avoid dream dictionaries

Because they offer universal meanings for images that are not universal.

A staircase does not mean the same thing to you as it does to your neighbor. A house, a road, an animal refer to your history, your memories, your personal associations.

The right question is therefore not "what does this element mean" but "what does this element bring to mind, for me". And then: which recent episode of my life might this dream be commenting on?

It is exactly the same approach as in a well conducted symbolic practice, where personal association is worth more than the printed definition. Asking the right questions in an introspective spread rests on the same principle: it is your reading that informs, not the symbol.

The special case of recurrence

A single dream is hard to comment on. A dream that keeps coming back offers something far more usable: a series.

Note each occurrence with its date. Then observe three things.

The variations. The dream is never exactly identical. What changes from one time to the next is often more telling than what stays the same.

The periods. When does it come back? Many recurring dreams intensify in specific contexts: a deadline, a type of relationship, a time of year.

The disappearance. One day it stops. Notice what had changed in your waking life at that moment. It is the most useful information in the whole series, and people always miss it for lack of notes.

Ask my question

A question keeps going round in your head? Ask it, take the time to write it down.

Combining dreams and spreads

Both materials work in the same register: images that condense what ordinary thinking has not put into words.

Many people record them in the same journal, and the comparison is often fruitful. A recurring dream and a card that keeps coming back in spreads frequently point to the same subject, with a different vocabulary.

It is also a heading that considerably enriches long term tracking, and a journal kept over a full year takes on another dimension when you add your striking dreams to it.

A simple exercise to make the link: draw a card in the morning while keeping the dream in mind, without asking a question. Note what the comparison produces. It is not an interpretation, it is an association, and it is often more accurate.

Dreams that cause anxiety

Recurring nightmares deserve to be handled with care.

An occasional nightmare is part of normal functioning. A nightmare that comes back several times a week, that disturbs sleep, that leaves lingering anxiety during the day, calls for support from a qualified professional. It is not a subject for symbolic interpretation.

The same rule applies to dreams linked to a traumatic event. No reading replaces the appropriate work.

This boundary is the same as for the whole practice, and knowing where personal growth ends and care begins helps you locate it clearly.

What dreams are not

They predict nothing. A dream is neither a warning nor an announcement. Any reading that claims otherwise steps outside its bounds.

They are not about other people. Dreaming about someone says nothing about that person. It says something about the place they occupy in you.

They do not deliver an outside message. They recycle your own material, which is already considerable.

They do not speak about health. No dream signals anything medical, and that ground belongs exclusively to health professionals.

The most effective exercise

Keep a notebook and pen within reach, at your bedside. A phone app works less well: the screen wakes you up and the memory of the dream evaporates while you unlock it.

Write three lines at most. Three months later, reread it all in one go. The recurring motifs will appear on their own, without any interpretive effort needed.

It is the same mechanism by which the cards reveal patterns that repeat: nothing can be seen in the moment, everything can be seen through accumulation.

Some dreamers notice images of flowing water or vases in their nights, which recall Temperance. Its meaning in tarot can enrich your interpretation.

Full moon nights are often associated with more intense dreams. Our full moon tarot spread to close a cycle can accompany this work on your dreams.

Placing this practice in context

Working with dreams naturally extends a process of self observation. It requires no tool, no purchase, no particular technique, which sets it apart from all the other symbolic tools and what each one requires.

To connect it with the rest, reading symbols as an inner mirror gives the framework: you observe, you write down, you reread, and you draw your own conclusions.
