Tarot card reading

My readings always begin with a tarot spread.

The Mirror of the Cards: Recognizing Your Repeating Patterns

There comes a moment, in regular practice, when you stop being interested in what the cards say and start being interested in what keeps coming back. That moment marks a change of use: the spread stops being a tool for answers and becomes a tool for observation.

That is when it becomes truly useful, and lastingly so.

What a pattern is

A sequence that plays out again, with different settings and identical mechanics.

The same enthusiastic beginnings followed by the same withdrawals. The same conflicts arising at the same point in a relationship. The same projects abandoned at the same stage. The same inability to ask, with the same type of person.

A pattern cannot be seen from the inside, because each time the situation seems new. It can only be seen through accumulation. This is especially clear on emotional ground, where what a reading can shed light on in a relationship often comes down to this kind of spotting rather than a prediction.

Why a single spread shows nothing

This is the essential point of this page.

A spread describes a moment. It can suggest a pattern, it cannot establish a repetition. Looking for your pattern in a single session produces grandiose, unverifiable interpretations.

Repetition can only be read over time, and therefore only in a written record. That is why a reading journal kept over a full year is the prerequisite for this work, and not a mere accessory.

What you spot when you reread

Four signals, easy to identify once you know what to look for.

The cards that come back. Some come out much more often than others in your spreads. Note them and look at which questions they appear on.

Rephrased questions. Six different phrasings of the same subject, spread over a year. The apparent subject changes, the real subject is identical.

The words you use. Your interpretations always use the same three or four terms. They describe your framework for reading the world.

Moments of intense activity. The periods when you drew the most. They almost always correspond to times when you were not deciding.

How the spread works as a mirror

The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why this works.

Faced with an ambiguous symbol, you project. Among all the possible readings, you choose the one that matches what is on your mind. This selection is involuntary, and it is extremely revealing.

In other words: it is not the card that informs you, it is your interpretation of the card. A year of these interpretations draws a portrait you would never have agreed to write directly.

This is the very heart of reading symbols as an inner mirror, and it requires no particular belief to work.

A specific spread to explore a pattern

Once the pattern is spotted, it deserves a dedicated session. Five positions, with a cool head.

  1. What repeats.
  2. What this repetition protects.
  3. What I gain by letting it continue.
  4. The precise moment when things tip, every time.
  5. One thing I could do differently, just one.

The third position is the one that disturbs most. You always gain something by maintaining a pattern, otherwise it would have disappeared long ago.

The fourth is the most practical. A pattern always has an identifiable tipping point, and that is where you can act.

These phrasings follow the general logic of an introspective spread: always about yourself, always open.

The cards that signal a pattern

Without making it a rule, certain configurations come up often when a repetition is at play.

Cards of cycles and returns. Cards of attachment, which ask what is holding you. Cards of stillness, which observe that nothing is moving despite the apparent agitation.

These cards are often badly received, because they seem to announce a blockage. It is a common misreading, and how to read so called negative cards as a useful signal shows that they almost always point to the mechanism rather than to the future.

The limit of this work

It has to be stated clearly.

Spotting a pattern does not dissolve it. It is a real first step, often a relief, sometimes enough to start a change. But an old, entrenched pattern that resists every realization calls for therapy with a qualified professional.

A symbolic practice can open the door and make you want to push it. It does not do the work that lies behind it.

And if the spread itself becomes the pattern, if the same question has come back every week for a year without any step following, it is the tool that needs questioning. How to spot the warning sign of dependence on readings gives simple, measurable criteria.

When the same situations keep coming back, the reversed Wheel of Fortune is often present. Discover the meaning of the Wheel of Fortune in tarot.

Spotting a pattern also takes a rigorous reading. Our guide to interpreting a tarot spread without getting it wrong will help you avoid projections.

Where to start

If you already keep a journal, reread three months in one go, pencil in hand. Underline what comes back.

If you do not, start tonight. The pattern will not become visible for several months, and that is normal: it is precisely what makes it a pattern.
