Tarot card reading

My readings always begin with a tarot spread.

The order in which you turn them over matters: I read each card in the place you give it.

Love Tarot Spreads: The Questions That Actually Get Answers

You lay out the cards, you look at them, and you do not know what to do with them. It is almost never a problem of interpretation. It is a problem of question. Before even laying down the first card, you still need to choose the deck that really speaks to you, because the choice between a Marseille tarot and a Rider Waite can shape your whole reading (Marseille tarot vs Rider Waite: which one to choose).

On emotional ground more than anywhere else, phrasing determines everything. Here are the phrasings that work, those that yield nothing, and why.

Why love questions go off the rails

Three reasons add up, and they are mechanical.

The stakes are at their highest. You want a precise answer, and above all you want a particular answer. Desire steers the reading without your noticing.

Information is lacking. In a work matter, you have facts. In a relationship, you have impressions, which leaves a lot of room for projection.

The question is about someone else. This is the decisive point. A spread sheds light on your position, never on someone else's thoughts.

The phrasings that block

"Will he call me back?" The card does not control anyone's phone. You will get an image that you will interpret according to your mood.

"When will we get back together?" No tool sets a date.

"What does she feel for me?" A question about someone else's inner life. Inaccessible, and the answer you read will be your own.

"Is this the right person?" This question asks the spread to validate a choice on your behalf.

"Is he cheating on me?" This ground does not belong to a symbolic reading. What a spread will never tell you about faithfulness explains why no symbol constitutes proof, and what to do instead.

The phrasings that open things up

They all start with "what" or "how", and they are all about you.

  • What is at stake in this situation, on my side?
  • What am I not allowing myself to say?
  • What do I need, and am I getting it?
  • What do I gain by leaving things as they are?
  • What keeps repeating, and since when?
  • How can I approach this conversation?

Compare: "will he call me back" versus "what is going on in this silence, and what do I do with it". The second opens thirty minutes of useful reflection, the first produces a wait.

Three spread structures that work for love

Draw the cards

Take a moment for yourself: follow your intuition and draw your cards.

The position spread

Three cards: what I give, what I receive, what is missing. It is the simplest and the most honest. It completely avoids the ground of the other person's intentions.

The decision spread

Four cards: what I gain by staying, what I lose by staying, what I gain by leaving, what I lose by leaving. Plus a fifth: what weighs on the decision that I have not named.

That fifth position does almost all the work. It puts its finger on the motive you have not admitted to anyone, and it is often the fear of what would come afterwards rather than attachment to the relationship.

The pattern spread

Three cards on a broader question: what keeps coming back in my relationships, what I choose without seeing it, what I avoid.

This one is not done in the heat of the moment. It is done with a cool head, on an old question, and it often gives the most useful readings of a whole practice.

Rules of method

Write the question down before shuffling. Word for word. Without that, it changes shape and quietly adapts to the cards that come out.

Define the positions before drawing. Otherwise you will adjust their meaning to the cards you get.

A single spread. If you do not like the result, that is exactly the moment to stop. Note your reaction, it is more instructive than the spread.

Not within an hour of an argument. You will read your agitation, not the cards. If you are a beginner and the structure of the deck still escapes you, the basics of the arcana and how they are organized are worth laying down before tackling such a charged subject.

These safeguards matter twice as much when you read for yourself, and the precautions to take so you do not only see what suits you are essential here.

The case of the relationship that has stopped moving

It is a particular situation, where the question "what is going to happen" makes no sense since, precisely, nothing is happening.

The right question becomes: what is keeping this balance in place, and what purpose does it serve? The spread then sheds light on a mechanism rather than a future.

What a love spread can really bring

It can name a need you could not put into words. Lay side by side two options you were avoiding comparing. Spot a pattern that has been repeating for years. Turn a diffuse worry into a question you can act on.

It does not tell your romantic future, guarantees no return, sets no date. And it does not replace the conversation you need to have.

To place these spreads within everything a reading brings to your love life, the general framework of a reading about a relationship reminds you what you can expect and what you should leave aside. The decision always remains yours.
