Choosing Between Two Job Offers: Asking the Right Question

Two offers on the table. You have made the comparison table, listed the pros, weighed the cons. And you still cannot decide.

This block almost always has the same cause: a decisive element is missing from the table, because you have not put it into words in front of anyone. That is exactly what a well built spread helps bring up.

The question never to ask

"Which of the two is better?"

It asks the spread to decide for you. You will get an indication you will not follow, or worse, one you will follow without believing in it, which produces lasting regrets.

A symbolic tool does not choose. It unfolds the terms of the choice.

Ask my question

A question keeps going round in your head? Ask it, take the time to write it down.

The three questions that work

  • What unfolds if I choose the first one?
  • What unfolds if I choose the second one?
  • What is tipping the balance that I have not named yet?

The third does all the work. Nine times out of ten, there is an element you know perfectly well and have told no one: the fear of disappointing someone, a salary you do not dare call insufficient, wounded pride, the opinion of someone close that you have not asked for.

Once that element is named, the decision becomes surprisingly simple. That is exactly what a reading used as a mirror rather than an oracle produces: it does not decide, it brings up what you already knew.

The spread in practice

Six positions, defined before shuffling.

  1. What option A brings me.
  2. What option A costs me.
  3. What option B brings me.
  4. What option B costs me.
  5. What I do not allow myself to consider.
  6. What I really need right now.

The fifth and sixth positions are the ones that count. You already know the first four, they mainly serve to warm up.

This structure belongs to the family of decision spreads, and its success depends entirely on setting the positions in advance. The safeguards to respect when reading for yourself apply here without exception: on a choice that matters, the temptation to reassign the positions is at its highest.

The criteria people always forget

A spread often brings up elements that are missing from comparison tables. The most common:

The real pace. Not the posted hours, the actual rhythm. Commutes, late meetings, expected availability.

The person you will work with. They weigh more than the job title, and almost nobody factors them into their decision.

What the job will teach you. Two years down the line, it is often the most rewarding criterion.

Reversibility. If it does not work out, what happens? A reversible option is worth more than a slightly more advantageous but closed one.

What you will say about this choice in five years. Phrased this way, the table sometimes changes completely.

What the spread will not do

It will not predict which of the two will "succeed". It will say nothing about the intentions of the people who made you these offers. It will set no deadline.

And it will say nothing valid about financial or contractual aspects, which belong to qualified professionals. A symbolic reading has no competence regarding a contract.

This limit applies to all material questions, and it is best stated clearly once and for all.

If the choice involves moving

The question then changes nature: it becomes half professional, half personal, and the criteria of the comparison grid become insufficient.

How to weigh the pros and cons of moving to another city for a job deals specifically with this configuration, where the heaviest elements never appear in the table.

When indecision drags on

If you have been hesitating for three weeks over a decision that should have taken five days, the subject is probably not the choice itself.

Question instead what the decision commits you to: a change of professional identity, the end of a comfortable situation, the fear of being publicly wrong. It is often the fear of failure, as blocking cards reveal it, that keeps the hesitation going far more than the offers being equivalent.

A rule of method

One spread, once, then put the deck away.

If you redraw every day waiting for a green light, you will no longer be reading anything: you will be looking for validation. Settle with a cool head the question of how long to wait before coming back to the same subject, and stick to it even as the deadline approaches.

If you want a first tendency before deciding, also read what a free tarot spread on work and money can really shed light on, and above all what it will never say.

And if you use an online tool to get a first idea, first check how to recognize a trustworthy free tarot site, with no registration and no credit card.

After the spread

Write down your decision and the main reason behind it, in one sentence, before announcing anything.

Reread that sentence the next day. If it still holds, go ahead. If it sounds hollow, you had not finished thinking.

To place this approach within everything a perspective brings to a career path, what a spread says and does not say about your professional future recalls the essential: it sheds light on the terms, you decide.
