The life path describes a direction. The expression number describes the means. It is the difference between knowing where you are going and knowing what you are going there with, and that is why these two calculations are always read together.

Where the first is derived from your date of birth, this one is calculated from your full name. It describes your available talents, the way you show up in the world, the toolkit at your disposal.

The correspondence grid

Each letter receives a digit from 1 to 9, in alphabetical order, and then you start again.

Three rules of handling:

  • Accented letters count like unaccented ones. É is worth 5, like E.
  • Hyphens and spaces do not count.
  • Y counts as a vowel when it is pronounced as one, and as a consonant otherwise. This distinction does not matter here, but it will for other calculations.

The calculation, step by step

You add up all the letters of your full name, first name and surname, then reduce.

Let us take an example, MARTIN LEROY.

MARTIN: M is 4, A is 1, R is 9, T is 2, I is 9, N is 5. Total: 30, reduced to 3.

LEROY: L is 3, E is 5, R is 9, O is 6, Y is 7. Total: 30, reduced to 3.

Sum: 3 + 3 = 6. Expression number 6.

As with the life path, you stop if you get 11, 22 or 33 along the way. What master numbers really imply also applies to this calculation, and it is actually here that they appear most often.

What each expression number describes

1: initiative, ease in making decisions, natural authority.

2: relational talent, diplomacy, an aptitude for connecting people.

3: ease of expression, creativity, easy contact, a way with words.

4: method, reliability, the ability to organize and to last over time.

5: adaptability, curiosity, ease with change and novelty.

6: a sense of responsibility, the ability to support, a taste for harmony.

7: depth of analysis, intellectual standards, an aptitude for research.

8: a sense of resources, efficiency, the ability to run complex undertakings.

9: broad vision, generosity, the ability to give meaning to a whole.

The real interest: the gap with the life path

This is where the reading becomes interesting. Compare your two numbers.

When they agree, the trajectory and the means go in the same direction. It is comfortable, sometimes a little monolithic.

When they diverge, it tells of a very real tension. A life path 1, who needs autonomy, with an expression number 2, whose talents are relational and diplomatic, describes someone who wants to move forward alone with tools made for collaboration. This kind of gap often explains a dissatisfaction that is hard to name.

So make sure you have the right life path before comparing. The block calculation method avoids the mistakes that would skew the whole comparison.

Which name to use

The question comes up every time, and it is legitimate.

The reference base is the full name on your birth certificate, because it describes the starting point, the means you received.

If you have gone by a different first name for years, or a married name, calculate both and compare. The gap tells a story: someone who dropped their first given name in favor of another rarely did so without reason.

The two other numbers of the name

The expression number adds up all the letters. Two related calculations isolate part of them.

The vowels alone give what motivates you deep down, what you are looking for without always saying so. The consonants alone give what others perceive first, your social front.

The difference between the soul urge number and the inner self number deserves clarification, because the names vary from one school to another and cause confusion. The gap between these two numbers is often the most interesting area of a grid.

The most common calculation errors

Forgetting a letter in a long name. Counting a hyphen. Using a made up letter grid found by chance while reading.

Always count twice, and write down the detail letter by letter rather than calculating in your head. The calculation mistakes that skew a whole profile are worth knowing before you interpret anything.

What this number does not say

It names no job. It predicts no success, meeting or event. It says nothing valid about health, legal proceedings or a financial decision.

It describes a toolkit. What you do with it, and when you use it, belongs to you alone. That is also how you should receive this kind of framework, as a mirror to spot your ways of functioning and not as a fixed description of your nature.
