Soul Urge Number and Personality Number: What Is the Difference?
The confusion between these names comes from a vocabulary problem, not a method problem. Depending on the school, the same calculations have different names, and you end up believing there are three or four numbers where there are only two.
Let us lay things out clearly. Two calculations, two pieces of information, and names that vary.

The two calculations
From your full name, you can isolate two subsets of letters.
The vowels only. They give what is most often called the soul urge number, sometimes the heart's desire or inner self number. It describes what motivates you deeply, what you are really looking for, often without putting it into words.
The consonants only. They give the personality number, sometimes called the outer expression or appearance number. It describes what others perceive of you first.
The sum of the two gives the expression number, which describes all of your means. What this number reveals from your full name is the reference calculation, of which the other two are components.
How to calculate them
Let us use the classic grid again: A is 1, B is 2, up to I which is 9, then start again with J which is 1.
Take MARTIN LEROY.
Vowels: A is 1, I is 9, E is 5, O is 6. Total 21, reduced to 3. Soul urge number 3.
Consonants: M is 4, R is 9, T is 2, N is 5, L is 3, R is 9, Y is 7. Total 39, reduced to 12, then 3. Personality number 3.
The case of Y calls for a decision. It counts as a vowel when it is pronounced as one, and as a consonant otherwise. In LEROY, some pronounce it as a vowel, others as the tail end of a diphthong. Decide once, write down your choice, stick to it.
What each number describes
Soul urge number. Inner motivation. A 6 seeks harmony and connection in it, a 7 seeks understanding, an 8 seeks control and resources. It is the most private number of the grid, the one that explains why you do what you do.
Personality number. The front. A 4 gives an impression of seriousness and reliability, a 3 an impression of lightness and easy contact, a 1 an impression of self assurance.
Neither is truer than the other. They are two different levels.
The gap, the real information
This is why these two calculations are worth doing. It is their difference that speaks.
When the two numbers are close or identical, the person shows more or less what they are. It is comfortable and easy for those around them to read.
When they diverge strongly, there is a gap between what is felt inside and the image perceived. A soul urge number 2, seeking connection and gentleness, with a personality number 8, projecting authority and solidity, describes someone people think is strong and who feels alone.
This kind of gap explains many relationship misunderstandings, and it is often what people come looking for without being able to name it. What a perspective can bring to a relationship often comes down to this: putting a word to a gap you felt without being able to describe it.

Which name to use for the calculation
The question matters even more here than for the life path, since these numbers depend entirely on the letters.
Your full birth name remains the base. But a first name you have gone by for twenty years changes what you show, and therefore your personality number as lived.
How to choose between the name you go by and your birth name details the special cases. The general rule: calculate both, and read the gap as information rather than as a problem.
Master numbers in these calculations
They can appear here too. A soul urge number 11 describes a very intense inner motivation, often hard to satisfy in an ordinary life.
What master numbers really imply is worth reading without complacency before rejoicing at finding one: it is a wider range, with what that costs.
Mistakes to avoid
Changing letter grids. Several versions circulate. Stick with the classic alphabetical grid from 1 to 9.
Forgetting a vowel in a long name. Write it down letter by letter rather than calculating in your head.
Treating accents differently. É is worth 5 like E, without exception.
These traps join the calculation mistakes that skew a whole profile, and they are all the easier to make here because you are handling isolated letters.
What it is useful for in practice
These two numbers are mainly useful for understanding why you feel misunderstood. Many people discover, by comparing them, that what they project is almost the opposite of what they need.
This awareness changes very concrete things: the way you ask for help, the way you present yourself, what you explain and what you leave others to guess.
To place these two calculations within the whole grid and understand in which order to approach them, the complete method for calculating and interpreting your numbers gives you the common thread. The rest, what you decide to show more of or keep to yourself, belongs entirely to you.
