Making a Decision With the Pendulum: Method and Limits

Stay or leave. Accept or refuse. This offer or the other one. When you have been hesitating for days, you sometimes dream of a tool that would decide for you. The pendulum, with its clear answers, seems made for that. And it can indeed help you decide, provided you use it with method and know its limits. Here is how to make a decision with the pendulum without trapping yourself.

What the pendulum can do for a decision

The pendulum answers closed questions. Faced with a decision, it is particularly useful for:

  • confirming or refuting an intuition you already have;
  • choosing between several options using a chart;
  • testing the right moment to act;
  • clarifying what really matters to you.

What it does not do: take responsibility for the decision in your place.

Nothing to install, no account to create: simply draw the cards.

Method 1: yes or no questions

It is the simplest method. For each option, ask a closed question:

  • "Is option A good for me right now?"
  • "Is option B good for me right now?"

Ask each question only once, staying as neutral as possible. If both answers are positive, or both negative, it is a signal: either the two options are equivalent, or the question needs rephrasing.

Method 2: the choice chart

More precise, this method lets you compare several options at once.

  1. Draw a half circle on a sheet of paper.
  2. Divide it into as many sections as there are options (for example three).
  3. Write one option in each section.
  4. Hold the pendulum at the center, at the base of the half circle.
  5. Ask the question: "Which option is the most right for me?"
  6. Observe which section the pendulum swings toward.

You can also add a "none" or "rephrase" section, very useful when no option really fits.

Method 3: percentage scales

Some practitioners use a chart graduated from 0 to 100 to assess, for example, "how well this option matches my values". This method takes a little practice, but it gives a more nuanced view than a simple yes or no.

The conditions for a good answer

  • Calm: do not ask the question in the heat of emotion.
  • Neutrality: if you want a particular answer at all costs, the pendulum is likely to reflect it.
  • A clear question: one idea, no negatives.
  • A reliable code: check your yes and no code before you start.

The limits of the pendulum

The pendulum amplifies micro movements linked to your inner state. That is what makes it valuable, and it is also its limit: when you are very emotionally involved, the answer often reflects your desire or your fear. That is why you never make an important decision on a single movement of the pendulum.

Questions of health, legal matters or invested money belong to professionals. The pendulum never replaces them.

And in love, be particularly careful: romantic questions are the ones where emotion influences the answer most. Our article on the free love pendulum and the questions to ask it offers more accurate phrasings.

Pendulum or tarot?

For a complex decision, the pendulum alone is not always enough. Tarot lets you understand the context, the stakes, the brakes. The pendulum then clarifies a point. To know which tool to choose for your question, our article oracle or tarot, which suits your question offers landmarks, and our guide tarot spreads, understanding the arcana and the decks lays the foundations of tarot.

Love, work, family: let us talk about what truly matters to you.

A concrete example

Claire is hesitating between three options: staying with her company, accepting an offer in another city, or going back to training. She starts with a tarot spread to understand what is at stake: the need for security, the desire for change, the fear of getting it wrong. Then she uses a choice chart with four sections, including a "none". The pendulum points to the training. Claire does not decide immediately: she lets a few days pass, then checks that this choice still resonates with her. It does. She signs up.

Listening to your dreams too

Some people notice that their dreams become more insistent during a period of decision. A place, a person, a situation keeps coming back. These images can complement the pendulum's answer. Our article on recurring dreams, how to note and interpret them on your own offers a simple method.

The pendulum, a tool for self knowledge

Ultimately, the pendulum mainly helps you listen to what you already know. It joins the idea of the spread as an inner mirror of self confidence. And if you want to discover the tool before getting started, a virtual pendulum is a first approach, keeping in mind what a free online reading is really worth.

In summary

The pendulum can help you make a decision, through yes or no questions, the choice chart or graduated scales. Use it calmly, with clear questions and a reliable code. Never decide an important question on a single movement, complement it with tarot if needed, and remember that the final decision is yours.
