Tarot card reading

My readings always begin with a tarot spread.

The order in which you turn them over matters: I read each card in the place you give it.

Waiting for an Important Answer: Coping With Uncertainty

An application sent. An offer pending. An interview twelve days ago. Waiting at work has the particularity of being entirely passive, which makes the need to know all the more powerful.

It is the period when people get the most readings, and the least useful ones. Here is why, and how to do things differently.

The question you want to ask

"Am I going to get it?"

It is the only one that matters to you, and it is precisely the one no serious reading will answer. A spread does not announce a recruiter's decision, does not set a date, does not guarantee any outcome.

If someone answers yes or no on this point, they are selling you a certainty that does not exist. It is actually one of the clearest landmarks for evaluating a practitioner, and the criteria that set a reliable professional apart say so clearly: no promise of results, no dates.

What happens while you wait

It is worth understanding the mechanism, because it is universal and it explains the behavior.

The mind copes poorly with an absence of information. So it produces scenarios, alternately optimistic and catastrophic, and keeps them spinning. Every day without news gets reinterpreted: it's a good sign, it's a bad sign, they're hesitating, they've already chosen.

None of these theories rests on anything. Their only purpose is to fill the void.

A spread laid out in this state only feeds the machine. You will read your scenarios in the cards, and you will keep the one that suits you that day.

The rephrasing that makes the wait productive

It changes everything, and it is simple: instead of questioning the result, question what comes next.

  • What will I do if the answer is no?
  • What has this application taught me about what I am looking for?
  • Which doors have I not yet pushed open?
  • What have I put on hold while waiting for this answer?

You will come out of the session with a plan rather than with a wait. The difference in how you feel over the following days is considerable.

The fourth question is often the most useful. Many people put everything on hold while waiting for an answer, which makes the wait even heavier.

A suitable spread

Four positions, defined before shuffling.

  1. What I still control in this situation.
  2. What I am telling myself that is not a fact.
  3. What I am doing with my time while I wait.
  4. The next step, independent of this answer.

The second position always surprises. The share of interpretation systematically exceeds the share of real information.

The fourth is mandatory. Waiting without a parallel action turns into paralysis.

The reflex to avoid at all costs

Redrawing every day on the same question.

It is the typical behavior of these periods. Each new spread dilutes the previous one, and you end up picking out, from the whole lot, the elements that feed your hope. The relief lasts a few hours, then the worry comes back.

Settle this rule with a cool head, before entering the cycle. The question of how long to wait before coming back to the same subject should be set in your journal, not at the moment anxiety rises.

If several options are in play

Sometimes the wait concerns two offers, or one answer arrives while the other is slow to come. The question then changes nature.

It becomes a question of choice, and it is handled with a different method. How to ask the right question when choosing between two offers offers a structure that brings up the decisive criterion, the one you have not admitted to anyone.

Filling the wait usefully

Three things really work.

Set a personal deadline. "If I haven't heard anything by such and such a day, I'll follow up, then consider it a no." This boundary measurably reduces anxiety, because it turns an endless wait into a finite delay.

Keep applying. It is not a lack of confidence, it is hygiene. A single option in progress creates disproportionate pressure.

Pick up what you put on hold. Exercise, a personal project, an evening out. The wait does not deserve to suspend your life.

When the wait reveals something else

Sometimes the intensity of the wait is out of proportion with what is really at stake. That is a signal.

It often indicates that this answer carries much more than a job: validation, proof of your worth, a way out of a situation that has become unbearable. That last case deserves to be dealt with on its own, and how to question an urge for a career change without lying to yourself gives the method for separating escape from genuine drive.

When the Sun appears in a waiting spread, it often announces a clarification. Discover the meaning of the Sun in tarot.

What to remember

No reading will tell you whether you will get it. What it can do is give you back your room to maneuver while you wait.

A deadline, a parallel step, a life that goes on. To place this approach within everything a perspective brings to a career path, what a spread says and does not say about your professional future honestly recalls what you can expect from it.
