Free, Complimentary, Unlimited: Why You Should Stay Cautious
These three words come up often in the field, and they do not cover the same realities. Some offers are perfectly normal, others serve as a way in to far more costly mechanisms.
Here is how to tell them apart.
Draw the cards and get your answers
Draw the cardsA spread, your message, my reading: enough to see more clearly.
A complimentary first exchange: normal
A few free minutes to check that you click, before committing to a paid reading: it is a commonplace commercial practice, found in many advisory professions.
It lets you assess the quality of listening, the clarity of the framework, the way the person answers you. It is a good thing, and there is no reason to be wary of it.
The landmark: this exchange is short, it does not address your underlying question, and the price of what follows is clearly announced before you continue.
A full free reading: to be examined
Here it is different. A complete service offered for free raises a simple question: how is the activity funded?
Three possible answers, and only one is problematic.
A practitioner who is starting out and building a client base. It exists, it is honest, and it is said openly.
A one off promotion, limited in time and announced as such.
A way in to something else. It is the most frequent case, and the only one that is a problem.
The mechanism to recognize
It always follows the same sequence, and it is worth knowing.
The free reading goes normally. Then, toward the end, you are told about an invisible obstacle: a block, a hindrance, an influence supposedly weighing on your situation. This diagnosis was not planned, it pops up.
Then comes the offer: a paid intervention to remove this obstacle. Then the escalation, as each sum paid calls for another, the work never being finished.
The initial free reading was therefore not an offer, it was an investment. And it is all the more effective because the person feels indebted after receiving something without paying.
The warning signs of a psychic scam describe this mechanism in detail, along with what to do if you are confronted with it.

Unlimited offers: a problem of another kind
Unlimited packages and subscriptions are not scams. They pose a different, more insidious problem.
They encourage exactly the behavior a healthy practice should discourage: getting readings often, for no particular reason, to soothe a worry.
And the mechanism is well known. The relief gets shorter each time, the frequency increases, and readings stop shedding light on a decision and start calming anxiety.
An unlimited package removes the only natural brake there was: the cost per session. How to spot the warning sign of dependence on readings gives measurable indicators, and frequency is the first of them.
Welcome offers and credits
A common variant: free minutes when you sign up, or an initial credit.
The principle is not dishonest in itself. The point of vigilance concerns what follows: once the credit is used up, what is the pricing structure?
If it is an uncapped per minute rate, the welcome offer mainly served to establish the habit. The landmarks that distinguish a normal price from one that should alarm you explain why this structure is a problem, regardless of the amount.
The three questions that settle it
Faced with a free offer, ask them before accepting.
"What happens afterwards?" What the next step costs, and in what form.
"Do you offer additional services during the session?" The expected answer is no.
"How long is this complimentary exchange?" An announced duration is a good sign. A vague duration less so.
These questions are part of the basic filter to apply before any commitment, detailed in the questions to ask before booking a reading.
What free really costs you
Even in honest cases, free offers have a psychological effect you should know about.
Receiving something without paying creates a feeling of indebtedness, even a slight, even an unconscious one. That feeling makes it harder to say no afterwards, to leave, or to turn down an offer.
It is not a reason to refuse every offer. It is a reason to decide in advance what you will accept, and what you will not.
This mechanism is closely related to the one described in reading symbols as a mirror rather than a crutch: as soon as the tool serves to soothe rather than to shed light, the benefit is reversed.
The rule that protects you from everything
Set your budget before the first contact, and stick to it without exception.
A maximum amount, a number of sessions per year. These two decisions, made with a cool head, neutralize almost all the mechanisms described here, because they depend on no offer and no pitch.
It is also the best protection during the periods when you are most vulnerable: after a breakup, during a wait, in a financial difficulty.
In summary
A short complimentary exchange: normal. A full free reading: ask what comes next. An unlimited package: it serves the provider, not you.
And in every case, no paid service should pop up during a session. For all the criteria to check before choosing someone, the landmarks that set a reliable practitioner apart remain the reference.
