The Warning Signs of a Psychic Scam
There is no state diploma, no professional board, no official price list. This lack of framework does not mean giving up on having standards: it means you have to build your own criteria.
Here are the signs that should make you back away, ranked from the most serious to the most subtle.

Warning sign number one: the paid blockage
It is the most damaging mechanism, and it always follows the same sequence.
Step 1. You are told about an invisible obstacle: a block, a hindrance, an influence supposedly weighing on your situation.
Step 2. You are offered a paid intervention to remove it.
Step 3. The amount demanded increases as you get more involved. Each payment calls for another, because "the work isn't finished".
If you hear this kind of offer, end the exchange immediately and without justification. No honest practice works this way, and you owe nobody an explanation.
Impossible promises
Five announcements no serious practitioner will ever make.
Bringing back a lover. Nobody can act on another person's feelings, make them come back or make them arise.
A precise date. "Before the end of the quarter", "in eleven days". That level of precision does not exist. Its only purpose is to make you come back to check.
Financial gain. No reading announces incoming money, an amount, an inheritance.
A guaranteed result. "I guarantee", "it's certain", "one hundred percent".
A health prediction. That ground belongs exclusively to health professionals, and a serious practitioner will refer you to them.
These five points are the basic filter, and what a serious practitioner never promises details them one by one.
Pricing warning signs
Money does not lie, and the structure of the price says a lot.
A price announced after the fact, or varying "depending on what came up".
Uncapped per minute billing, which turns your speaking time into an expense and keeps you from thinking calmly.
Completely free readings followed by a paid offer. A short free first exchange is normal commercial practice. A full reading that is entirely free almost always comes with something else afterwards.
Unlimited packages, which encourage exactly the behavior a healthy practice should discourage.
There are landmarks for telling a normal price from one that should alarm you, with orders of magnitude and the pricing structures to avoid.
Staging warning signs
They are subtler and just as revealing.
The unsolicited announcement. A message received when you had not asked for anything, claiming to hold important information about you. No serious approach starts this way.
Artificial urgency. Few slots available, a window closing, a situation that will get worse if you do not act now.
Fear as an argument. A pitch that creates worry to push you into a reading plays on an unhealthy mechanism.
Early questions about your financial situation. There is no technical justification for them.
Refusing to be contradicted. You say "that doesn't resonate with me", and the person insists instead of adjusting.
The gap between what is said and what can be verified
An often misunderstood point: very general statements always ring true.
Telling someone they have been through a difficult period and sometimes doubt their choices works on practically anyone. You then remember the accurate parts and forget the rest, which in hindsight gives an impression of remarkable precision.
Knowing this mechanism takes nothing away from you. It lets you tell a practitioner who helps you think from a script designed to impress.
That is also why reviews and testimonials should be read with caution: a testimonial reporting a prediction that came true cannot be verified and is selected by nature. In addition, a psychic reading can also help you align your choices with your deeper values, as explained in this reflection on tarot and personal values.
What is not a sign of a scam
To be fair, a few elements are often misinterpreted.
A high price is not suspicious in itself. An advisory service is billed according to time and experience.
A remote practice poses no methodological problem.
A refusal to cover certain subjects is, on the contrary, an excellent sign: it shows the person knows the boundaries of their practice.
A reading you do not like is not a scam. Sometimes it is exactly what you came for.
What to do if this concerns you
If you have already paid money into a paid blockage scheme, two reflexes.
Stop all payments immediately, even if you are told the work is in progress and that interrupting it would be dangerous. That speech is part of the mechanism.
Keep records of the exchanges and payments, and report the situation to the authorities responsible for fraud and consumer protection.
Many of these signs can be spotted in the very course of the exchange, and knowing how a remote session is structured lets you see immediately when someone is improvising or stepping outside their role.
Honest free spreads do exist, provided you know what they can say. Our article on the free yes or no tarot reading and its limits helps you use them without becoming dependent on quick answers.
"Free" offers are often at the heart of these traps. To see clearly, read our article on the real difference between free and paid psychic readings.

The ten minute check
Before any appointment, ask three questions in writing: what is your price and the expected duration, which subjects do you not cover, how does the session unfold.
A clear answer to all three rules out most bad surprises. A vague answer to any of them is enough to move on, and it is useful to know the questions to ask before booking a reading so you know what you should hear.
For all the criteria to check before choosing someone, the landmarks that set a reliable practitioner apart are the reference to keep in mind.
